Disputes over maritime borders between China and Vietnam have come to a more agressive expression. Vietnam has started 'routine' fire drills not far from the problematic area in an attempt to show its neighbor that the country is quite determined. Demonstrations took place in Ho Chi Minh City in which many Vietnamese denounced the alleged intrusion of Chinese ships in Vietnamese territorial waters. Similar protests happened in Beijing.
Control of oil and gas resources is also at stake here.
